The Oncology Unit provides services to primarilyadult oncology patients with occasional adolescent patients. The Oncology Unitprovides continuous 24 hour care to patients with medical, hematological andoncological conditions including Bone Marrow Transplant and to those patientswith potentially life-threatening medical conditions that require observationand care. The outpatient care may be continued when the outpatient clinic isclosed for those who need continual daily treatments or follow-up.
The nursing staff is trained to accept mostmedical/surgical patients after the admission screening criteria is met.Screening criteria is for infection to protect the oncology population fromunnecessary exposure to infection. The nursing staff is certified inchemotherapy administration. Dynamaps, pulse ox, telemetry, and lab results,are used to evaluate and monitor the patient's condition. Day staff arecertified to provide moderate sedation.
The Charge Nurse is a professional practitionerwho assesses, manages, directs and provides nursing care activities for theinpatient units / clinical areas. She/he is responsible for the planning,organization, delegation and completion of patient and unit activities for aspecific shift. The charge nurse focuses on the quality andoutcomes of care and facilitates the role and responsibilities of the teammembers.
Minimum Education: RN licensure in theState of Missouri
- Minimum of two years of nursing experience desired.
- Satisfactory performance appraisals.
- Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates professionalism in working relationships and during delivery of care.
- Possesses good problem solving abilities including follow up and reporting.
- Remains calm and is able to handle highly stressful situations.
- Possesses excellent organizational skills.
- Is available for variable shifts.
- Energetic and motivated.
Working Conditions: May be exposed to therisk of blood borne diseases. Exposure to unpleasant elements(accidents, injuries, and illness). Subject to varying andunpredictable situations. Handles emergency and criticalsituations. May work variable hours
Physical Requirements: Prolonged,extensive, or considerable standing/walking. Occasionally lifts,positions, pushes, and/or transfers patients. Occasional reaching,stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching. Must be able to lift 50 poundsand pull 100 pounds.
